One of the most common questions we hear is: “What size axle does my 5’ x 8’ trailer need?”
The quick answer: most 5x8 utility trailers use a 3,500-lb axle with a 73″ hub face and a 58″ spring center, usually with a 5-lug hub pattern.
Why This Is Just an Estimate
Not every 5x8 trailer is built the same. Different manufacturers may use different frame widths, hanger spacing, or bolt patterns. So while a 3,500-lb / 73″ hub face / 58″ spring center is the most common, it’s important to verify.
How to Confirm Your Axle Size
-
Measure hub face to hub face – Across the outside faces where the wheels bolt on.
-
Measure spring center to spring center – The distance between the welded spring pads.
-
Tip: If you can’t access the spring pads easily, measure center frame to center frame. This will give you a very close number for spring center spacing.
-
-
Check wheel bolt pattern – Most 3,500-lb axles are 5 on 4.5", but always confirm.
-
Verify capacity – Standard 5x8 utility trailers use a single 3,500-lb axle, but check your trailer’s ID tag or weight rating.
Pro Tip from the Shop
Even if your trailer is “just a 5x8,” never order an axle without measuring. A few minutes with a tape measure (hub face, spring center, and bolt pattern) can save you the headache of buying the wrong axle.
