Upgrading from 7,000 lb trailer axles to 8,000 lb trailer axles can provide additional strength, heavier-duty components, and greater load capacity. However, even when both axles have the same 89-inch hub face measurement, that does not mean they provide the same amount of clearance around your trailer frame.
The 8K axle uses larger brake assemblies and drums than the 7K axle. Those larger components extend farther inward, reducing the space available between the backing plates.
Before ordering 8K trailer axles, you must measure your trailer frame and confirm that it will fit safely between the larger brake assemblies.
Same Hub Face Does Not Mean Same Inside Clearance
A 7K axle and an 8K axle can both measure 89 inches from hub face to hub face, but their inside backing plate measurements are different.

The 8K axle provides 2 5/16 inches less total inside clearance than the 7K axle.
That equals approximately 1 5/32 inches less clearance on each side.
This difference matters because your trailer frame must fit between the backing plates without contacting the brakes, drums, or other axle components.
Why Does the 8K Axle Have Less Clearance?
The 8K trailer axle is built with larger and heavier-duty components to handle greater loads. The brake assemblies and drums are larger than those used on a standard 7K axle.
Because the brakes and drums extend farther inward, the available space between the backing plates becomes narrower, even though the hub face measurement remains exactly the same.
This is why you cannot assume that an 89-inch 8K axle will fit simply because your trailer currently uses an 89-inch 7K axle.
Measure Your Trailer Frame Before Ordering
Before upgrading, measure the outside width of your trailer frame where the axles will be installed.
For an 89-inch hub face Carter 8K axle, the inside backing plate measurement is approximately 77 3/8 inches. Your trailer frame must fit within this space while still leaving adequate clearance on both sides.
Do not build or install the axle with the frame pressed tightly against the backing plates. The brake assemblies must have enough room to avoid contact with the frame and allow proper installation, inspection, and maintenance.
Example: Upgrading an 89-Inch 7K Axle
Imagine your trailer currently has a 7K axle with an 89-inch hub face.
The measurement from the inside of one backing plate to the inside of the opposite backing plate is approximately 79 11/16 inches.
You replace it with an 8K axle that also has an 89-inch hub face. The new inside backing plate measurement is only 77 3/8 inches.
Although the hub face measurement did not change, you lost 2 5/16 inches of total inside clearance.
If the trailer frame or surrounding brackets were already close to the 7K backing plates, the 8K axle may not fit without interference.
Check More Than the Hub Face Measurement
Hub face is only one measurement needed when replacing or upgrading a trailer axle. You should also confirm:
- Hub face measurement
- Spring center measurement
- Trailer frame width
- Inside backing plate clearance
- Spring type and width
- Spring pad position
Do Not Order Based on Hub Face Alone
One of the most common mistakes when upgrading trailer axles is ordering solely by the hub face measurement.
Two axles can have the same 89-inch hub face while having very different brake sizes, drum dimensions, tube sizes, and inside clearances. This is especially important when moving from 7K to 8K trailer axles.
Before placing your order, measure everything and compare those measurements with the specifications of the new axle. Taking a few extra minutes to confirm clearance can prevent an expensive ordering or installation mistake.
